Blagaj and Počitelj are often placed on the same day-trip map, but they offer completely different experiences. Blagaj is shaped by cold water, shade and the Buna spring; Počitelj climbs a sunlit stone hillside above the Neretva valley.

Both are close to Mostar, yet travelling between them by public transport is less simple than the distances suggest. The right choice depends on whether you want the lowest cost, a flexible return or enough time to explore without watching the bus timetable.

Which place should you visit first?

Start in Blagaj in summer. The riverside is cooler in the morning, and visiting the tekke before lunch leaves the hottest part of the day for a meal, transfer and a slower walk in Počitelj later.

If photography is the priority, reverse the order only when you have checked light and heat. Do not squeeze both villages into two hurried photo stops; allow about two hours in Blagaj and at least 75–90 minutes in Počitelj.

What to do in Blagaj

The main sight is the historic tekke beside the source of the Buna River, set beneath a high limestone cliff. The ensemble is included on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s UNESCO tentative-list documentation; see the country entries on the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

Dress respectfully if entering the tekke and be prepared to remove shoes. Afterwards, walk along the river, have coffee or choose a simple trout lunch. Restaurant tables closest to the water are pleasant, but compare menus before sitting down.

How to explore Počitelj

Počitelj is a historic hillside settlement of stone houses, walls, religious buildings and steep lanes. Its historic urban site is on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s UNESCO Tentative List.

There is no single flat sightseeing loop. Wear shoes with grip, carry water and climb only as far as the heat and your knees allow. The village is most rewarding when you pause at different levels rather than race to the highest viewpoint.

Bus, car or private tour?

Local buses connect Mostar and Blagaj, and the operator publishes current departures on the Mostar Bus timetable. Check the exact stop and return before leaving.

Počitelj lies on an intercity road rather than the same urban network. Combining both places independently may require separate tickets, waiting and careful return planning.   • 09:00: pickup or departure from Mostar.
  • 09:25–11:30: Blagaj tekke, river walk and coffee.
  • 11:30–13:00: lunch in Blagaj or on the route.
  • 13:30–15:15: Počitelj lanes, mosque area and viewpoints.
  • 16:00: return to Mostar, or continue toward Kravica by prior arrangement.

In July and August, shorten exposed walking at midday. Families and guests with limited mobility should keep the schedule flexible because Počitelj’s stone lanes are steep and uneven.
