Međugorje is close enough to Mostar for a relaxed half-day trip, yet the two places feel entirely different. Mostar is built around the Neretva River, the Old Bridge and the narrow streets of the old town. Međugorje is quieter and centred on prayer, pilgrimage and the rocky hills surrounding the village.

The road distance is approximately 27 kilometres. Driving usually takes between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on traffic and your pickup point in Mostar. There is no international border between the two places, so you do not pass through passport control.

Travelling by bus

The bus is normally the least expensive option. Direct services operate on the route, but times vary by season and date. Check the return before leaving Mostar: an outward departure may work well while the available return does not fit the prayer programme or the time needed on Apparition Hill.

Your ticket should show the exact departure point in Mostar. Arrive at least 15 minutes early. FlixBus currently lists a journey of about 45 minutes, but confirm your date on the official route page.

Taking a taxi

A taxi is faster and more flexible, particularly for two or three people. Agree on the full one-way or return price, whether waiting time is included, the collection time and the exact meeting point before leaving Mostar.

Driving a rental car

The road is straightforward and does not involve a border crossing. A car works well if you plan to continue towards Kravica Waterfalls, Ljubuški, Počitelj or a family winery. Parking around St James Church can fill during major pilgrimages and the evening prayer programme.

What should you see in Međugorje?

St James Church

The church, exterior altar, confession areas and surrounding prayer spaces form the centre of parish and pilgrimage life. Services change seasonally, so check the parish’s official prayer programme on the day of your visit.

Apparition Hill

Apparition Hill, locally called Podbrdo, is reached by a steep and uneven stone path rather than a paved trail. Wear shoes with grip and carry water in warm weather. The hill is a place of prayer, not simply a sightseeing viewpoint.

Cross Mountain

Cross Mountain, or Križevac, is a longer and more demanding climb. Allow several hours and avoid adding it casually to a short visit. The parish identifies St James Church, Apparition Hill and Cross Mountain as the principal prayer sites in Međugorje.

Dress and conduct

The parish asks visitors to cover shoulders and knees around prayer sites. Photography should be discreet and avoided during Mass or Adoration. Comfortable shoes matter if you are climbing either hill. Read the parish’s instructions for pilgrims before visiting.

Can you combine Međugorje with Kravica?

Yes. Kravica is a natural addition, particularly between late spring and early autumn. A full day can include a morning in Međugorje followed by the waterfall, lunch or a tasting at a family winery.
